Gatsby Africa Site Species Matching Tool - (SSMT)

Background Information

Tree growers and landowners of all sizes consistently make sub-optimal decisions as to which species to plant and where. In response, Gatsby Africa developed the Site Species Matching Tool (SSMT) to address this constraint.

SSMT is a geospatial tool that overlays the growing conditions across Kenya and Tanzania (based on climate, water availability, soil types, and topographic data) with the growing requirements of varied species and matches them to different climatic areas. The tool is designed to be a preliminary guide in selection of ecologically suited species to sites, instead of selecting a species and trying to modify the site to suit.
