Tree Seed Programme

In recognition of the need to increase the forest cover in Kenya,
Sessional Paper No. 1 of 2007 on Forest Policy, provides guidelines for
intensified tree planting inside and outside gazetted forests. Availability
of high quality tree seed is key to realization of this policy objective.
KEFRI through its Tree Seed Programme is mandated to produce tree
seed for all types of planting programs.

The Programme through Kenya Forestry Seed Centre is the only formal
seed producer of source identified and tested tree seeds in Kenya and
is the main source of seeds for plantation establishments for Kenya
Forestry Service.  All the seeds produced and distributed by the
programme through the Kenya Forestry Seed Centre, are collected
from selected and approved tree seed sources based on quality and
  scientific principles.

All the seeds produced and distributed by the programme through the Kenya Forestry Seed Centre, are collected from selected and approved
tree seed sources based on quality and scientific principles. The seeds are further subjected to quality tests following international protocols to
ensure that they meet the required standards.

The Kenya Forestry Seed Centre is registered as a seed merchant in conformity with the Seeds and Plants Varieties Act (CAP 326). The Centre
is also a member of the Seed Trade Association of Kenya (STAK) an organization of seed companies that are registered by the Kenya Plant
Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS). To embrace a participatory approach to seed production, the Institute hosts the Tree Seed Advisory
Committee that formulates policies and practices with respect to tree seed production and use in Kenya.

The main focus and activities of Tree Seed Programme include:

* Establishment, selection and management of tree seed sources to meet increasing demand for seed.

* Tree seed collection through KEFRI centres and sub-centres at Muguga, Nyeri, Kitui, Kibwezi, Gede, Londiani, Turbo, Kakamega and Maseno.

* Tree seed processing including: extraction, drying and cleaning.

* Tree seed quality testing on: physiological vigour, moisture content, germination, purity and weight.

* Tree seed distribution through KFSC at Muguga as the major distribution point, and four other KEFRI centres namely Maseno, Londiani, Gede
and Karura. In addition, trained stockists have been appointed to distribute seeds to improve seed availability in the country.

* Tree seed research on storage and dormancy.
