Natural Forests Research Programme
The natural forests in Kenya play an important role in environmental
protection and provision of products which include catchment
protection. These forests help in regulating water quantity and quality
as well as condition of fundamental commodities such as air, soil, and
genetic diversity of flora and fauna.
These forests also form an integral part of livelihoods of rural
communities. However, forest degradation and deforestation continues
to be a major concern in Kenya hence threatening these functions.
Concerted effort is therefore needed to address the causes and
consequences of deforestation and development of appropriate
methods of rehabilitating, use and conserving the remaining natural
forests.

The Natural Research Forests Programme aims to provide technologies and information needed to conserve soil, water and biodiversity and to
exploit the productive potential of natural forests in a sustainable manner. The Programme is also involved in developing methodologies for
Participatory Forest Management (PFM) with forest adjacent communities in Kenya. This is in line with Kenya’s Sessional Paper No. 1 of 2007
on Forest Policy and the Forests Act (2005) which has recognize the importance of involving stakeholders including local communities in the
management of forests.
The main focus and activities of Natural Forests Research Programme include:
* Developing and demonstrating methods of natural forest rehabilitation.
* Development of technologies for propagation and management of high value indigenous tree species.
* Sustainable utilization of wood and non-wood forest products.
* Production and provision of information to enhance biodiversity conservation.
* Evaluating the impact of reforms in the forestry sector.
* Monitoring regeneration and growth of natural forests.
* Monitoring and evaluation of community involvement in Participatory Forest Management.
* Monitoring and evaluating effects of government driven development activities, policies, and laws on forest users.
