Kitui Regional Research Centre
Kitui Regional Research Centre has a mandate to conduct research in
forestry in arid and semi arid lands (ASALs) of Kenya. The Centre aims
to harness and develop dryland forestry resources by generating
technologies to rehabilitate, manage and promote sustainable
utilization of woodlands for improved livelihoods and environmental
conservation in the ASALs.
The Centre head office is located in Kitui town, 194 km east of Nairobi.
The Centre has an on-station experiment forest site at Tiva, 21 km from
Kitui town along Kitui-Machakos road, two sub-centres at Kibwezi and
Garissa, and one field station at Bura. The Centre undertakes its
activities in 9 counties namely; Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo,
Marsabit, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, and Tana River.

Research activities undertaken and products and services offered include:
* Development of technologies for establishment and management of trees in drylands.
* Domestication of high value indigenous tree species such as Melia volkensii, Osyris lanceolata, and Terminalia brownii.
* Development and utilization of high value non-timber forest products such as gums and resins, dyes, and cosmetic and pharmaceutical
products.
* Identification, development and utilization of high value indigenous fruit tree species such as Tamarindus indica, Vitex payos and Adansonia
digitata.
* Control of invasive species especially Prosopis juliflora through management and utilization.
* Documentation, validation and integration of indigenous technical knowledge in woodland management.
* Training of stakeholders including farmers, extension officers, and natural resource managers mainly on forestry and allied natural resources
in the drylands.
* Technology transfer and dissemination of information through field days, open days, print and electronic media and agricultural shows.
* Hire of conference and seminar facilities, accommodation, heavy machinery, picnic and video shooting sites.
* Consultancy services in natural resource management.
* Sale of high quality tree seeds and seedlings.
