Forest Products Research Centre - Karura
The Forest Products Research Centre has a national mandate
to undertake research, and generate and disseminate
technologies for efficient processing, value adding and utilisation
of wood and non-wood forest products.
The Centre addresses challenges in utilization of forestry
products from farms, natural forests, woodlands and plantations.
The Centre is located in Karura Forest about 5 km from Nairobi
city , off Kiambu Road.
Research activities undertaken and products and services
offered include:

* Development of low cost wood preservation technologies
* Evaluation of wood properties of different tree species for suitability for various end uses
* Development of technologies for efficient charcoal production
* Development of efficient briquetting technology
* Product development and value adding to improve marketability of forestry products such as aloe products, gums and resins, and jams and
wines from indigenous fruits
* Development of bamboo products for cottage industry
* Timber sawing, planning, moulding, furniture design and joinery, wood seasoning and preservation
* Chemical characterization of plant products
* Technology transfer and dissemination of information through field days, open days, print and electronic media, agricultural shows and trade
fairs
* Training in:
- Management and value addition of various natural products such as cosmetic and pharmaceutical products from Aloes, and jams and
wines from indigenous fruits trees
- Biomass energy production such as efficient charcoal production and briquette making
- Bamboo product making
- Efficient on-farm timber processing
