  The Coastal Eco-Region Forestry Research Programme’s mandate is
  to conduct research in forestry in the coastal region of Kenya.
  The Programme addresses challenges in: natural forestry ecosystem
  that includes the Kayas, and lowland, mountain and mangrove forests;
  coastal dryland forests; farm forestry; and forest plantations.

  The Programme Head Office is located in Arabuko Sokoke Forest
  (ASF),Malindi District, Kilifi County, about 120 km North of Mombasa
  and 20 km South of Malindi town, along the Malindi – Mombasa road.
  The Programme’s activities are undertaken in 6 counties namely;
  Kwale,Taita-Taveta, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu.

Research activities undertaken and products and services offered include:

      * Developing technologies and management guidelines for rehabilitation of degraded coastal forests.

      * Developing best practices for Participatory Forest Management (PFM).

      * Monitoring species dynamics for biodiversity conservation and sustainable utilization of forests including mangrove forests.

      * Domestication of dryland tree species such as Terminalia spinosa.

      * Management of invasive species mainly Prosopis juliflora.

      * Development of dryland forest based products.

      * Propagation, establishment and management of short rotation species.

      * Propagation, establishment and management of suitable coastal commercial plantation species such as Tectona grandis.

      * Genetic improvement of selected tree species.

      * Selection and establishment of seed stands and seed orchards.

      * Provision of high quality tree seedlings.

      * Provision of advisory services on forest pests and diseases.

      * Tree seed collection, processing, testing and sales.

      * Training in forestry and allied natural resources.

      * Technology transfer and dissemination of information through field days, open days, print and electronic media and agricultural shows.
